FUD39 is a mutation in the PSBP gene encoding protein OEE2. Despite isolation following 5-fluorodeoxyuridine treatment, which is generally considered to act preferentially on chloroplast DNA, this is a nuclear mutation.

CC-4142 and CC-4143 are more recently acquired stocks of this mutant.

Phenotype: variable number of flagella

This mutant has a variable number of flagella, usually zero to six. The flagella are of normal length, and the cells appear to be of normal size and shape. The mutation was UV-induced in strain ‘NO mt+’ (equivalent to CC-620) by Kuchka and Jarvik, originally vfl-2-220. Taillon et al. determined that vfl2 is a G to A transition mutation in the structural gene for centrin, producing a Glu to Lys change at position 101, the first amino acid of the E-helix of the protein’s third EF-hand.
